Nursten* Department of Food Science and Technology, The University of Reading, PO Box 226, Whiteknights, Reading RG6 6AP, UK Introduction This issue of the Journal is to honour Derek Land for his contribution to its success in the 12 years that he has been its Editor. However, in order to understand how it is that he has been able to achieve what he has, it is necessary to consider what he brought to the task: this is best done by looking first at his career up to that point. Next, his record as Editor will be reviewed, and finally how, in parallel, he has continued to have scientific impact and to maintain his scientific credibility. 1931–1986 Although a Yorkshireman by birth, Derek Land read biochemistry at the University of Liverpool, in a school with an excellent reputation. He obtained his degree with First Class Honours in 1953 and proceeded to undertake research under the supervision of Trevor Goodwin, who was later to hold chairs both at Aberystwyth and then back at Liverpool, as well as becoming an FRS.
