THE STANDING CONFERENCE OF NATIONAL AND UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES

THE STANDING CONFERENCE OF NATIONAL AND UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES by K. W. Humphreys* The Standing Conference of National and University Libraries has novv been in existence for over five years and it might seem appropriate to consider its achievements during that period. The first meeting held in September 1950 was attended by six representatives of National libraries and by thirteen representatives of university libraries; Dr. Powell, Librarian of the University of California at Los Angeles and a member of the Advisory Committee of the Association of Research Libraries, and Mr. Bryant, Librarian of the American Library, were present äs guests. The reasons for the formation of the Conference were set out in a letter signed by eight librarians which had been circulated to twenty seven libraries: "It has been widely feit' it reads 'that there would be a useful place in the Organisation of British libraries for an independent body which could concern itself with the work and interests of the large national and university libraries and could speak for them to the outside world . . . without conflicting with the activities [of the Library Association and its University and Research Section]; an independent body such äs is suggested could, it is thought, do useful work http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Libri - International Journal of Libraries and Information Services de Gruyter
