Paperback $ 12.This collection of essays by the Brazil-born Parisian philosopher Maria Villela-Petit engages with the contrasting receptions of the Greek poetic and philosophical tradition in the thought of Martin Heidegger and Simone Weil. Composed at different times throughout the author’s long career, most of the papers in the volume can be found in French under the 2015 title Incursions en Grèce ancienne en compagnie des anciens et des modernes. Joseph O’Leary’s succinct and lively translation makes these penetrating essays accessible to English readers without the qualms commonly associated with translation projects. The volume is an excellent resource for those interested in the growing literature on Heidegger’s Greeks, particularly Plato. Villela-Petit draws on Simone Weil’s lesser-known but warmly responsive scholarship on the Greeks to provide a supplement and a corrective to Heidegger’s idiosyncratic interpretations. Villela-Petit’s rich philosophical and literary culture, evident in her erudite engagement with the Greek sources and her ease of reference to modern European thinkers, owes much to her wide academic circle in Paris, which included such admired mentors as Pierre Aubenque, Henri Maldiney,
