Abstract

With the increasing use of Internet and electronic facilities together with the globalization of all areas of life including medicine and science, also medical journals are affected by an increasing ‘flood’ of clinical and scientific material to be published. Thus, in 2017 JEADV counted more than 2600 submitted articles while it was only able to finally print ca. 350 reviews, originals or short reports in the actual 12 issues. All over the world, the academic career of young doctors or researchers depends heavily on international publications; the sentence ‘publish or perish’ has a long tradition and has become more and more competitive. While until recently, there was a natural limit for accepting articles by the size of the printed volumes, this is no longer the case with electronic‐only journals and with the increasing trend to ‘open‐access’ policy. Open access has an idealistic core and noble intentions. However, it can be abused by people just looking for collecting money from authors eager to publish. These journals are called ‘predatory’ journals with often very similar names to existing good journals and fictitious editorial boards and editors. Often there is no review process at all or only a ‘fake’ review system. So the journal receives money
