Attention is drawn to the likely occurrence of q reversals in resonantly excited multiphoton ionisation (REMPI). The q-reversal effect observed by Connerade is now well established in the single-photon spectroscopy of both atoms (Connerade et al (1985)) and molecules (Ashfold et al (1986)). To date, it does not seem to have been observed in REMPI, but it can be seen in the results of a recent numerical study of a REMPI spectrum by Rahman-Attia et al (1986)). The authors formulate an explicit theory for the q reversals of REMPI, explaining both the origin of the effect and its connection with the single-photon case. It is further noted that in REMPI, as opposed to single-photon spectroscopy, control can be exercised over the q-reversal effect by tuning one or more of the incident photons.
