We are all familiar with the old saw about not being able to see the forest for the trees: the inability to understand the whole because of a preoccupation with specifics. In zoos I think we suffer from this syndrome to a certain degree, particularly when it comes to implementing education programs about conservation. We tend to focus upon the final act: the bulldozer plowing into a forest wall in New Guinea, an African tribesman snaring a colobus monkey for its fur, an elderly woman in China selling medicinal powders derived from rhino horn and the bones of monkeys. These individual acts are only the symptoms of an international economic and political system that does not yet recognize the importance of sound environmental planning.
