Schizophrenic performance when distractors are present: Attentional deficit or differential task difficulty?

Schizophrenic performance when distractors are present: Attentional deficit or differential task... Previous results comparing schizophrenics' and normals' performance in neutral and distractor conditions may be an artifact of discriminating power. Therefore, in a study using 50 33-yr-old inmates in a correctional institution, 50 42-yr-old attendants at a state hospital, and 50 undergraduates, 4 digit-span tests were constructed. 2 contained irrelevant distractor numbers between presentations of relevant numbers. Each distractor test was matched with a neutral test for coefficient alpha, mean, and variance of test difficulty using 100 normal Ss. This matching was cross-validated on 50 additional normal Ss. The 1st pair of tests contained shorter digit-strings than the 2nd pair. 19 chronic schizophrenics showed a differential performance deficit on the longer distractor test but not on the shorter test. It is suggested that distraction debilitates schizophrenics' performance by interfering with subjective organization in short-term memory. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of Abnormal Psychology American Psychological Association
