Acta anat. 73: 176-191 (1969) D epartment of Geology. Field Museums of Natural History, Chicago, USA The auditory ossicles (malleus, incus) and their relationships to the tympanic: in marsupials W . S e g a l l Few papers have been w ritten about the auditory ossicles since the publication of the monograph by DoitAN [1905]. Most of them deal with their taxonomic value (Co c k er e ll et al. [1914a, 1914b; S eg all [1943, 1947]. Stroganov [1945] and W a ss if [1948]). Some of the papers bring morphology and topography of the os sicles in relation to their function (H e n s e n [1962], Oaks [1967]). This study shall dem onstrate the intrinsic topographic-morphologic relationship of the ossicles and their various components to each other and to the tympanic with increasing speciali zation in the marsupials. M orphological rem arks Only those morphological characters of th e ossicles will be mentioned th a t are pertinent to this study. Malleus and incus only will be considered since they alone show im portant changes. The stapes has a different ontogeny tha n the two other ossicles, and shows no sufficiently noteworthy morphological differences
