Macro Principles, PowerPoint, and the Internet: Four Years of the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Macro Principles, PowerPoint, and the Internet: Four Years of the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Macro Principles, PowerPoint, and the Internet: Four Years of the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Robert P. Parks Faced with the formidable task of preparing a keynote address for a conference titled “Advancing the Integrating of New Technologies into the Undergraduate Teaching of Economics,” I decided that rather than my usual Internet-for-Econ- omists demo, I would describe my experiences using technology in teaching macroeconomic principles. Although the theme of the conference was integrat- ing new technologies, every paper addressed the issue of actively involving stu- dents in the learning process, albeit with technology, and that is one of my goals in using technology. I require weekly e-mail evaluations of both the book and the lectures. I also require each student to construct a Web page that displays at least six economic sites with annotations. Finally, I use PowerPoint slides displayed with a video projector. My experiences with these technologies have been good but not trou- ble free-hence my subtitle, “Four years of the good, the bad, and the ugly.” GOALS I have three goals in a principles class: make economics interesting to students, get students interested in economics, and have sqme economic concepts retained for at least five http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png The Journal of Economic Education Taylor & Francis

Abstract

Macro Principles, PowerPoint, and the Internet: Four Years of the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Robert P. My experiences with these technologies have been good but not trou- ble free-hence my subtitle, “Four years of the good, the bad, and the ugly.” GOALS I have three goals in a principles class: make economics interesting to students, get students interested in economics, and have sqme economic concepts retained for at least five
