World-Soul across the Ages

World-Soul across the Ages Christoph Helmig (ed.), World Soul—Anima Mundi. On the Origins and Fortunes of a Fundamental Idea. Topics in Ancient Philosophy / Themen der antiken Philosophie, Vol. 8. Berlin-New York: Walter de Gruyter, 2020. 113,95 €.The volume originated in a Berlin conference in 2011 on the subject. The papers presented there have been upgraded to take account of more recent literature.Although the concept of world-soul comes from the Timaeus, it does not mean that earlier thinkers did toy with roughly similar ideas. Christian Vassallo aims to show that it emerges in Heraclitus. He discusses it within the context of the notion of λόγος. Besides establishing a clear-cut distinction between the Heraclitian λόγος and ψυχή, he draws on B 50 to show that the world-soul plays a mediating role between λόγος and κόσµος. The paper is appended with a Stoic fragment mentioning Heraclitus’ views on the world soul. One might object that the author build too much on the notion of λόγος having an extension (βαθύς, p. 35) and serving as kind of receptaculum rerum for ubiquity does not necessarily involve spatial extension. Furthermore, one might also ask for an explanation for the active role of ψυχή in B 36 (p. 42). http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png The International Journal of Platonic Tradition Brill
