Editorial j. microencapsulation February, 2004, vol. 21, no. 1, 1 The 14th International Symposium on Microencapsulation was held at the National University of Singapore in September 2003. The Symposium was very efficiently organized by Professor Paul Heng and his local organizing committee. Attendance was reduced to about 100 because of the SARS outbreak earlier in the year, but the Symposium was again very successful. A special issue of the Journal will be devoted to selected papers from the Symposium later in the year. The 15th International Symposium on Microencapsulation will be held in Parma, Italy in September 2005, organized by Professor Paolo Colombo. The International Microencapsulation Society elected Paul Heng as President for the period 2003–2005, with Paolo Colombo as Vice President. The function of the Society has developed largely to ensure the organization of the International Symposia (started in 1971) and to underwrite other meetings devoted to micro- encapsulation in its broadest sense. The Bioencapsulation Research Group (with reciprocal membership of the International Microencapsulation Society) continues to be very active under the leadership of Professor Denis Poncelet. The EU has been funding a Virtual Institute in Bio- and Micro-encapsulation Science and Technology (VIBMST).
