EVERT operation in surgery is an experiment in bacteriology. The success of the esperi- rncnt in respect. of the salvation of the pat.icnt, the quality of healing in t.he wound, the amount of local or constitutional reaction, the disconiforts during the days following opera- t.ion, and the nature and severity of any possible sequels, dcpend not only on the skill hut also upon the care exercised by the surgeon in the rit.ual of the operation. The ‘ ritrlalist ’ must not be a man unduly concerned with fixed forms and ceremonies, with carrying ollt t,he rigidly prescribed ordinances of the surgical sect, to which he owes allegianre ; but a iiian who, while ob.ierving with unfaltering loyalty those practices which csperience and cspcrimcnt have together imposed upon him, refu.ses to be merely a mimic bound by custom and routinc. He must set endeavour in continual motion, and seek always and carnestly for simpler mebhods and a better way. In the craft of surgery the master word is siniplicity.
