YUSEI, CHINNASWAMY TIRUPPATHI, AND FREDERICK H. LEIBACH. Active VADIVEL meeting the requirements of adults. Because of the apparent importance of the absorption of , there have been many studies aimed at characterizing the of this amino acid (1, 3, 5, 14, 18, 24-26, 28). But, these studies have so far failed to produce a consensus on the properties of across the epithelium. In other tissues where has been investigated in detail (4, 8, 10, 15, 17, 19, 20, 27, 31, 35), uptake of this amino acid occurs via a ,&amino acid carrier that accepts as substrates ,&alanine and hypo as well. But the presence of a P-amino acid carrier in the brush-border membrane of small intestine has not been consistently established. Some studies in rabbit, hamster, rat, and chicken intestine have failed to demonstrate the presence of an active system for P-amino acids in this tissue (5, 14, 18, 25, 28), whereas some other studies have provided evidence to the contrary (1, 3, 24, 26). These controversial data on the of and other P-amino acids underscore the need for further studies on this uptake process. In the present study, we have investigated the characteristics of in brush-border membrane
