British Journal of Dermatology (1981) 105, Supplement 21, 65. Prognosis and factors influencing prognosis in industrial dermatitis DESMOND BURROWS Department of Dermatology, Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast Prognosis in industrial dermatitis can be assessed in three ways: (1) Clearing of dermatitis. (2) Social or financial disadvantage. (3) Effect on employment. SKIN CONDITION Long term follow-up of patients with industrial dermatitis shows that a substantial number are slow to resolve. Mayer (1938) assessed 301 patients after a period of up to 10 years and found that 32% were still active. Phillip (1954) and Hellier (1958) in a 1-4 year follow-up of 139 cases and 124 cases respectively of industrial dermatitis found that 100% and 77% were still active. Burrows (1972) in a 10-13 year follow-up of 115 cases of industrial dermatitis, selected because they were seen for medico-legal reports, found that only 24 were completely clear and free of relapses after 10 years. Fregert (1975) found that 546 % of 555 patients after 10 years still either had permanent or periodic symptoms. THE SOCIAL AND FINANCIAL LOSS It is important to know if present methods of compensation are adequate. Kuhl (1971) found that 63 9% of patients were socially worse off
