Prognosis and factors influencing prognosis in industrial dermatitis DESMOND BURROWS Department of Dermatology, Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast Prognosis in industrial dermatitis can be assessed in three ways: (1) Clearing of dermatitis. (2) Social or financial disadvantage. (3) Effect on employment. SKIN CONDITION Long term follow-up of patients with industrial dermatitis shows that a substantial number are slow to resolve. Mayer (1938) assessed 301 patients after a period of up to 10 years and found that 32% were still active. Phillip (1954) and Hellier (1958) in a 1-4 year follow-up of 139 cases and 124 cases respectively of industrial dermatitis found that 100% and 77% were still active. Burrows (1972) in a 10-13 year follow-up of 115 cases of industrial dermatitis, selected because they were seen for medico-legal reports, found that only 24 were completely clear and free of relapses after 10 years. Fregert (1975) found that 546 % of 555 patients after 10 years still either had permanent or periodic symptoms. THE SOCIAL AND FINANCIAL LOSS It is important to know if present methods of compensation are adequate.
