Explaining Heterosexual Men's Attitudes Toward Women and Gay Men: The Theory of Exclusively Masculine Identity

Explaining Heterosexual Men's Attitudes Toward Women and Gay Men: The Theory of Exclusively... How can heterosexual men's hostility toward women and gay menbe explained? A new individual-difference variable, exclusively masculine identity, comprising a masculinized idealself and feminized undesired self, was examined as a predictor ofthe psychological factor underlying heterosexual men's attitudestoward women and gay men. A complementary model explanationwas supported, with exclusively masculine identity emerging as asignificant predictor in addition to right-wing authoritarianismand social dominance orientation. However, this effect wasaccounted for solely by ideal self masculinization. Avenues forfuture research are suggested, and a more general version of thetheory, exclusively in-group identity, is proposed as apotential mechanism underlying all intergroup attitudes. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Psychology of Men & Masculinities American Psychological Association
