Mechanisms of Bacterial Virulence

Mechanisms of Bacterial Virulence Medical microbiology is a vast area of endeavor embracing the nature of disease resulting from the interaction of parasitic prokaryotes and unicellular eu karyotes with their human host. The field is equally concerned with the physiology, genetics, and molecular biology of pathogenesis and the nature of nonspecific: and immune mechanisms of host defense. The purpose of this review is to compare recent findings regarding the role of virulence factors in negating nonspecific mechanisms of host defense or in modifying the onset of specific immunity. Even these limited aspects of the field encompass a voluminous literature; thus no single facet could be considered in detail within 0066-4227/85/ 1 001-002 1$02.00 BRUBAKER the limited space available. The value of this report therefore resides in its attempt to provide an overview of common properties shared by the major pathogenic phenotypes and to define recent advances in understanding viru lence factors unique to these phenotypes. An excellent outline of defensive measures utilized by the mammalian host has been prepared by Mims ( 1 61), and the negation of these measures by pathogenic organisms was considered in recent symposia (68, 191 ) .
