Introduction

Introduction Symposium: On Quentin Skinner, from Method to Politics Few contributions to methodological debates among intellectual historians have been as consequential as Quentin Skinner’s 1969 article, ‘‘Meaning and Understanding in the History of Ideas,’’ and few have inspired as much controversy and comment. To mark the fortieth anniversary of the publica- tion of that piece, a symposium was held at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York on October 23, 2009. The participants included Melissa Lane, Bryan Garsten, Nadia Urbinati, Philip Pettit, and Quentin Skinner. Helena Rosenblatt organized and moderated the event, which was sponsored by the Ph.D. Program in History, the Center for the Humanities, and the Journal of the History of Ideas. The following are revised versions of the papers presented, which focus both on Skinner’s seminal essay, and the subsequent contours of his work in the history of political thought and contemporary exchanges in political theory.
