On the Assimilation of Phosphorus in Chlorella pyrenoidosa

On the Assimilation of Phosphorus in Chlorella pyrenoidosa A. A. AL KHOLY Red Sea Marine Biotogicat Station, Cairo University (Bceeivcd December 1, 1955) Ketchum (1939) showed how the amounts of phosphorus and nitrogen vary in cells of the plankton algae Nitzsehia ciosterimn and Chlorella pyrenoidosa. It" these algae weri' growing in a medium deficient in phosphorus, cells were produced showing a P-content one third of the normal found by him. This phosphorus deficii'ncy could be recovered if phosphate was added to the medium. The absorptiou of P took place bolh in ligbl and in the dark. These observations were verified by Mackereth (1953), wbo used cells of the diatom Asterionella formosa. This author obtained a minimum amount of 0.06 X 10^" (ig P per cell.
