The International Encyclopedia of Gender, Media, and CommunicationCamgirls

The International Encyclopedia of Gender, Media, and Communication: Camgirls [ The term camgirl refers to girls and women who use audiovisual digital media to communicate with public audiences. However, the meaning of the term is in flux: while it initially described early, tech‐savvy livecasting pioneers who put their everyday lives on display, it today more commonly means performers who engage in sexual behavior in front of the camera, usually in real time and often in exchange for financial compensation, and hybrid forms thereof. In a first step, this encyclopedia entry traces the historical development of the camgirl between those two poles. It discusses how the camgirl has been interpreted in different contexts and from varying perspectives (such as the male gaze, community building, pornography, intimacy, or empowerment). Second, it discusses contemporary successors and, finally, how the camgirl relates to a present online culture of ubiquitous self‐exposure. ] http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png

Abstract

[ The term camgirl refers to girls and women who use audiovisual digital media to communicate with public audiences. ]
