Tsumura Uournal for the Study of the Old Testament Supplement Series 83, Sheffi.eld Academic Press, 1989. £22) This monograph is a product of a project on the first eleven chapters of Genesis being pursued at Tyndale House, Cambridge. The author, who holds a professorial chair at the University of Tsukuba in Japan, offers a careful study of a number of significant details in early Genesis, notably, in New International (and Authorised) Version parlance, 'formless and empty (without form and void)', [tohu wiibohu], (Gen. 1:2); 'deep (deep)' [tehOm] (Gen. 1:2); 'streams (mist)' ['ed] (Gen. 2:6); 'Eden (Eden)' ['eden] (Gen. 2:8), and others in less detail, including consideration of the etymologies of hiddeqel, 'Tigris' and periit, 'Euphrates' (pp. 137-139). He makes full use of relevant linguistic material in the cognate Semitic languages as well as Sumerian, and reviews many previous theories of early commentators. He treats the text of Genesis with respect, and though he takes full account of the work of critical scholars, he accepts their results only in so far as they are consonant with a careful view of
