The author, who holds a professorial chair at the University of Tsukuba in Japan, offers a careful study of a number of significant details in early Genesis, notably, in New International (and Authorised) Version parlance, 'formless and empty (without form and void)', [tohu wiibohu], (Gen. 1:2); 'deep (deep)' [tehOm] (Gen. 1:2); 'streams (mist)' ['ed] (Gen. 2:6); 'Eden (Eden)' ['eden] (Gen. 2:8), and others in less detail, including consideration of the etymologies of hiddeqel, 'Tigris' and periit, 'Euphrates' (pp. 137-139). He makes full use of relevant linguistic material in the cognate Semitic languages as well as Sumerian, and reviews many previous theories of early commentators.
