The determination of innovation strategy in companies is one of the most crucial activities to be conducted to achieve the company’s vision. Determining the innovation strategy also reveals the innovation roadmap that needs to be followed for the company to reach its vision. The aim of this study is to propose a novel approach for the analysis of firm-level innovation strategies, namely the Corporate Innovation Strategy Determination Model (CISDM).Design/methodology/approachThe proposed approach considers each product group produced in the company and calculates gaps corresponding to product groups. The CISDM determines the innovation strategies for each product according to the required/expected and current situation for each type of innovation. The CISDM considers the dominant type of innovation implemented for each product group based on R&D performance in practice. To show how the CISDM works in practice, a real-life case study is conducted in a company for analysis of firm-level textile innovation strategies.FindingsTo show how the CISDM works in practice, a real-life case study is conducted in a company for analysis of firm-level textile innovation strategies. The CISDM is straightforwardly accepted and adopted in the implemented company due to the simple and practical applicability of the proposed approach. The result of the application of the proposed approach shows that it can easily be used for companies operating at every scale in the manufacturing industry.Originality/valueThere is no specific tool developed in the literature that systematically determines the innovation strategy of companies based on objective criteria. To fill this significant gap in the literature, a novel structured approach is proposed to determine innovation strategies of a company in this study. The proposed approach is called the CISDM.

This paper aims to analyze the effect of strategic philanthropic initiatives on enterprise innovation resilience (EIR) while exploring the moderating roles of internal performance feedback and external media attitude within this context.Design/methodology/approachTo validate the research model, this study employs data from Chinese listed companies spanning from 2010 to 2022. A two-way fixed effects model and a series of robustness tests were used to examine the research hypotheses.FindingsThe research findings demonstrate that strategic philanthropy (SP) significantly enhances EIR, with the promoting effect becoming stronger as the duration of SP activities increases. Moreover, the aforementioned effect is positively moderated by performance surplus and media support, negatively moderated by performance deficit, and exhibits an inverted U-shaped moderating effect in response to media pressure.Practical implicationsEnterprise managers must prioritize the cultivation of EIR during uncertain environments. Specifically, this can be achieved by implementing SP to build symbiotic stakeholder relationships and by fully considering the alignment between internal performance conditions and external media attitudes.Originality/valueThis study is the first to quantify EIR and verify that SP promotes the formation of symbiotic relationships with stakeholders, fostering collaborative innovation and enhancing EIR, thereby supplementing the understanding of innovation trends towards open concepts.

Developing eco-friendly businesses through green process innovation and green product innovation has become prevalent in generating profits and demonstrating environmental responsibility. However, contemporary hospitality management research has overlooked the impact of green training in influencing green process innovation and green product innovation. The focal study aims to understand how green training can foster green process innovation and green product innovation. We aim to examine dual mediating mechanisms, such as adaptive capability and environmental orientation, to assess the connection between green training, green process innovation and green product innovation.Design/methodology/approachThe study analyzed 308 responses from middle and junior-level managers working in five-star hotels in China through structural equation modeling.FindingsThe results exhibit that managers’ green training positively relates to green process innovation and green product innovation. The evidence specifies that adaptive capability and environmental orientation are dual mediation mechanisms connecting green training to green process innovation and green product innovation.Research limitations/implicationsThe research model has been tested in Chinese hotels; the scholar community can expand to other service industries, specifically healthcare, education institutes, transportation, and government services. This research emphasized green training as a GHR practice; researchers could focus on other human resource tools, such as recruitment and selection, rewards and benefits, talent management, and employee engagement, to research their influence on green innovation management.Practical implicationsThis work has practical implications for academics, managers and policymakers, demonstrating that disseminating green training programs can help achieve green process innovation and green product innovation in the environmental sustainability agenda. Further, adaptive capability and environmental orientation should also be fostered among the organizational members to increase green process innovation and green product innovation.Originality/valueThis study advances the natural resource-based view by discovering a dual mediation mechanism that provides insights into how green training can shape green process innovation and green product innovation in organizations.

Service performance (SVP) in the food retail industry is crucial for maintaining a competitive advantage, particularly as customer expectations rise and firms face increased disruptions. Consequently, supply chain (SC) practices, including supply chain resilience (SCR) and supply chain innovation (SCI), are now recognized as strategic assets rather than merely back-end processes. These practices are essential for enhancing operational efficiency and customer service quality. This study explores the direct and indirect effects of SCI and SCR on SVP in the food retail sector, with a specific focus on the moderating role of environmental scanning (ES).Design/methodology/approachThe analysis applied the PLS-SEM approach to analyze data gathered from 375 managers in the food retail sector.FindingsThe findings indicate that SCI exerts both direct and indirect positive effects on SVP. Specifically, SCI enhances SVP directly through its innovative practices and processes. Indirectly, this effect is mediated by SCR, which strengthens the link between SCI and SVP by enabling food retailers to better adapt and respond to disruptions. Moreover, the benefits of SCI on SVP are significantly magnified when ES practices are integrated, providing timely and relevant information about external factors and market trends.Practical implicationsOur research offers valuable insights for food retail managers. Prioritizing resilience-centric supply network practices is crucial, given that the positive impact of SCI on service operations is channeled through SCR. Proactive ES is recommended to align SCI with market dynamics, optimizing service outcomes.Originality/valueThe study contributes original insights given the lack of previous research on the interplay between SCI, SCR, ES and SVP within the food retail sector, especially in a developing context. It expands our understanding and provides new perspectives on these dynamics, contributing valuable knowledge to this domain.

There is a lack of studies exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) enables operational excellence, which justifies the successful integration of AI and how it can be connected to circular economy (CE). This study aims to examine how AI-driven operational excellence enables resource utilization to facilitate the CE transition.Design/methodology/approachIn total, 12 enablers were identified through literature, and using the Fuzzy-DEMATEL technique, their cause-effect analysis and prominence rating are conducted.Findings“Improved transparency, coordination and trust”, “improved forecast of demand and other uncertain supply chain (SC) parameters”, “accurate real-time information flow”, “decision support for specialized CE-based business models” and “improved eco-accounting of SC impacts” are identified as the most prominent enablers.Originality/valueThese enablers will help enterprises identify specific use cases of AI in CE-based business models, thereby accelerating adoption and improving resource utilization and circularity. The study’s findings will assist managers and practitioners in understanding the operational aspects of how AI contributes to enhanced resource circularity.

The present study investigates the role digital transformation (DT) plays, both directly and indirectly, in digital capability (DC) and digital innovation (DI) in the context of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Saudi Arabia.Design/methodology/approachThe resource-based view (RBV) theory underpins the study’s theoretical framework. Using a convenience sampling method, the researchers employed a quantitative approach to gather cross-sectional data from top managers. The study utilized 390 valid samples to conclude the investigation.FindingsWe used structural equation modeling (SEM) using AMOS version 27.0 to test the hypothesized relationships. The results demonstrate that DT significantly and positively impacts DC, DI and sustainability. The DI factor emerges as a strong positive predictor of sustainability. Conversely, DC is a negative predictor of sustainability. Besides, DI mediates the connection between DT and sustainability. On the other hand, the DC factor negatively mediates the relationship between DT and sustainability.Practical implicationsThe findings would assist policymakers and planners in catalysing a digital revolution within companies by fostering the development of digital capabilities, promoting DI and encouraging innovative ideas. The study helps update business practices and make industry standards sustainable and resilient.Originality/valueFinally, the study’s findings contribute to the literature by providing an integrated theatrical framework that simultaneously offers both direct and indirect effects of DT on sustainability in the presence of two robust mediators.

Numerous studies have confirmed the potential of supply chain digitalization. However, in practice, supply chain digitalization does not always effectively improve transparency, highlighting the need for an investigation into its mechanisms. This study is based on the resource-based view (RBV), which explains how firms gain a competitive advantage through the optimal allocation of resources and capabilities. RBV offers strong theoretical support for analyzing the complex mechanisms by which supply chain digitalization impacts transparency.Design/methodology/approachThe research data is sourced from 351 Chinese fashion companies. The sample was selected based on the diversity of company size, geographic location and market positioning, covering a broad range from small and medium-sized enterprises to large corporations. Data were collected using a stratified random sampling method, combining surveys and field interviews to ensure the representativeness and reliability of the data.FindingsThe study tests the data hypotheses using structural equation modeling and regression analysis. The findings indicate that supply chain digitalization not only has a direct positive impact on supply chain transparency but also indirectly enhances transparency through supply chain collaboration. Additionally, the study identifies the moderating role of cross-organizational governance in this mechanism, revealing the boundary conditions of the impact pathways.Originality/valueThis study provides practical guidance for firms to enhance supply chain transparency during their supply chain digitalization process. Although the research focuses on the Chinese fashion industry, its findings offer valuable insights for similar industries, such as electronics, in improving supply chain transparency. These findings have broad applicability and significance.

Organizations face diverse challenges in navigating their less-structured business processes (LSBPs). These LSBPs are characterized by an unpredictable and often knowledge-intensive nature, unlike structured processes that have standardized actions. Conventional business process management approaches often encounter difficulties to foster innovation within organizations that are primarily dealing with LSBP characteristics, resulting in managers facing difficulties in identifying and evaluating their innovation efforts in an LSBP-environment. To help these managers, this study iteratively develops and validates a brainstorming tool designed as a practical guide for assessing an organization’s current (A-IS) and desired capabilities (TO-BE) and prioritizing improvement actions for innovating LSBPs.Design/methodology/approachThis research follows a design-science research (DSR) methodology by integrating build-test iterations through expert evaluations, real-life case studies and workshops across multiple industries.FindingsThe findings extend knowledge in business process management and innovation management by offering a practical tool for assessing and improving an organization’s innovation capability in LSBPs. Ample empirical evidence demonstrates that the tool allows revealing distinct capability distributions across different areas, highlighting specific strengths in each capability area.Research limitations/implicationsThe study is limited to qualitative evaluation methods. Others limitations relate to the specific terminology and thus complexity of certain questions, which may affect accessibility for users. The tool is intended for content-specific workshops, not as a replacement for existing systems.Practical implicationsThe tool helps organizations with a systematic approach to assess their AS-IS and define TO-BE capabilities. It facilitates a critical gap analysis, prioritization of resources using effort impact matrix and implementation tracking.Originality/valueThis study introduces a novel brainstorming tool designed for innovating in LSBPs.

This study integrates the knowledge-based view (KBV) and dynamic capability theory (DCT) to explore how market knowledge enhances resilience and robustness in tourism supply chains (TSCs), shaping pre- and post-disruption performance. PLS-SEM was chosen for its ability to handle complex relationships and latent constructs, ensuring robust empirical validation.FindingsMarket knowledge enhances resilience and robustness, which mediate its impact on TSC performance. Resilience fosters proactive crisis response, while robustness ensures stability through supplier diversification and digital integration. These insights extend beyond Taiwan, offering global relevance for tourism markets facing pandemics, geopolitical instability and climate disruptions.Practical implicationsTo enhance adaptability, travel agencies should adopt AI-driven market analytics, supplier diversification and scenario-based crisis management. Policymakers can develop regulatory frameworks for crisis preparedness and sustainable supply chains, ensuring economic stability and long-term resilience. This research supports sustainable tourism, promoting adaptive, data-driven and resilient business models in a volatile environment.Originality/valueThis study applies KBV and DCT to tourism supply chain resilience, emphasizing market knowledge as a key to proactive (resilience) and structural (robustness) crisis responses. Integrating contingency theory (CT) and the natural resource-based view (NRBV), this study investigates the effects of green customer orientation (GCO), green competitive orientation (GCM), innovative climate (INC) and knowledge management practices (KMP) on organizations’ green manufacturing practices (GMP) to achieve sustainable performance.Design/methodology/approachData collected from 507 Chinese manufacturing small and medium enterprises using a survey and analyzed using the partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach.FindingsAll proposed hypotheses were supported. Organizations that prioritize GCO and GCM and cultivate INC and KMP are more likely to adopt GMP and achieve sustainable performance. GMP also mediates all formulated associations.Practical implicationsThis study provides strong evidence for practitioners to foster an innovative organizational culture with effective KMP to enhance sustainable manufacturing. Organizations should also proactively adopt GMP to improve their performance.Originality/valueThis study incorporated green strategic orientations (GCO and GCM) with organizational capabilities (INC and KMP) into an integrative framework and tested their holistic effects on GMP to promote organizational performance.
