Volk's book makes a key contribution to a growing body of scholarship exploring historical and contemporary understandings of majority rule and the problems it poses to discreet minorities, such as legal scholar Lani Guinier's The Tyranny of the Majority: Fundamental Fairness in Representative Democracy (New York, 1994); legal historian Mark A. Graber's Dred Scott and the Problem of Constitutional Evil (New York, 2006); and historian James H. Read's Majority Rule versus Consensus: The Political Thought of John C. Calhoun (Lawrence, KS, 2009). Moral Minorities is must reading for historians of the antebellum period, those interested in the cultural and popular sources of American political development, and U.S. legal and constitutional scholars and historians.
