EDITORIAL Thymic Tumors: Adopting an Orphan Thoracic Tumor as a Model of Personalized Medicine Nicolas Girard, MD, PhD hymic epithelial tumors represent a wide range of anatomical, histological, clinical, and Tmolecular malignant entities, which may be aggressive and difficult to treat. The man- agement of thymic tumors is a paradigm of cooperation between clinicians, surgeons, and pathologists, from establishing the diagnosis to organizing the therapeutic strategy, as well as the follow-up of patients. As other rare cancers, thymic tumors, beyond their actual low fre- quency, have been marked for long by the absence of comprehensive epidemiological data, XXX the low number of biological and clinical research initiatives, and the lack of therapeutic recommendations. From 1989 to 2009, more than 75% of indexed publications on thymic malignancies were single case reports, whereas less than 5% were reporting on cohorts of 100 or more patients. In the routine practice setting, personalization of care inherent to the rarity of the disease has mostly been based on historical, often preconceived representations, rather than evidence-based data. No randomized trial has ever been conducted in the field. As a constant feature of rare tumors, collaboration may make a success, and thymic tumors represent a model of incremental effort in this setting. The International Thymic Malignancy Interest
