Wage Settlements in Manufacturing, 1979‐84: Evidence From the CBI Pay Databank

Wage Settlements in Manufacturing, 1979‐84: Evidence From the CBI Pay Databank The Confederation of British Industry's Databank is widely recognised as one of the major public indicators o f trends in wage settlements. Established by the CBI in 1979, the Databank Survey asks its respondents to report the percentage increase in earnings which they estimate will result from their pay settlement. These returns, received on an on-going basis, are collated into monthly Pay Reports, the results of which are sent to the participants, with overall trends issued for publication. Since the question on the increase in earnings is forward-looking, and the returns are made immediately following the negotiation of the settlement and so concurrent with, or ahead of, its implementation, the Databank Reports have an important role in the monitoring of wage settlement trends. This monitoring function, however, was only one of the CBI's objectives in establishing the Databank. Of equal importance was the establishment of a database which would give a multi-dimensional perspective on the process of pay determination not available through standard statistical sources. The Databank Survey questionnaires have, therefore, been designed with a number of unique features. They are based on the settlement group, which is the basic building block of wage determination in Britain. Abstract

The Confederation of British Industry's Databank is widely recognised as one of the major public indicators o f trends in wage settlements. (The
