The Importance of Studying Underemployment

The Importance of Studying Underemployment Maynard , D. , & Feldman , D. ( 2011 ). Underemployment: Psychological, Economic, and Social Challenges . New York, NY : Springer , ISBN: 978‐1‐4419‐9412‐7 ( 317 pp., $129.00). Unemployment is the focus of most reports on employment and is one standard used to measure the strength of the economy. Less attention is given to other issues regarding employment, such as underemployment. Underemployment is the composite of one or more of the following: involuntary part‐time work, involuntary temporary work, over‐qualification, and underpayment. Underemployment indicators are rarely used as economic indicators and the psychological consequences are understudied (Belle & Bullock, ). Yet, as Maynard and Feldman note, attention to underemployment and related issues is important because there are more people experiencing some form of underemployment than there are persons who are without work of any kind. As such, studying the psychological, social, economic, and policy implications of underemployment is of utmost importance, making the edited book by Douglas Maynard and Daniel Feldman, Underemployment: Psychological, Economic, and Social Challenges, a timely publication. As the editors note, “no edited book has [previously] been published to summarize what we currently know about underemployment” (p. 1). The book synthesizes the research to‐date http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Analyses of Social Issues & Public Policy Wiley
