The former allis and twaite shad fisheries of the lower Rhine, The Netherlands

The former allis and twaite shad fisheries of the lower Rhine, The Netherlands Summary In the past, the allis shad (Alosa alosa) and the twaite shad (Alosa fallax) were the subjects of yearly intensive fishery during April and May, with data on catches of allis shad traceable from 1880 to 1932, and for twaite shad from 1893 to 1970. Fishing for allis shad came to an end in 1910, and for the twaite shad in 1966. The restocking attemts of these species, possibly leading to recolonization of the Rhine River, are currently under review. The decline and ultimate disapearance of the allis shad was caused by overfishing and destruction of the spawning areas. The twaite shad fishery declined rapidly in 1942; the species was unable to reproduce after construction of the Delta works in Hollands Diep and Haring‐vliet, which changed the tidal regime of the Lower Rhine into a non‐tidal river.
