Textbook in psychiatric epidemiology, M.T. Tsuang, M. Tohen, and G.E. Zahner, eds. New York:... As the editors, all members of the Harvard Institute of Psychiatric Epidemiology and Genetics, tell us in the preface, this book was developed to meet the needs of graduate students or psychiatric residents seeking training in psychiatric epidemiology. Chapter authors are selected from senior faculty at the 11 training programs in Psychiatric Epidemiology and Biostatistics currently funded by the National Institute of Mental Health. The book is divided into four parts, the first of which, “Historical Overview,” contains but a single chapter. In the second section, entitled “Study Design and Methods,” individual chapters examine a range of methodologic issues in psychiatric epidemiology including the analysis of categorical data, longitudinal designs, comorbidity, and approaches to services research. A separate chapter reviews methodologic issues in psychiatric genetics. The third part, “Assessment,” contains separate chapters examining the problems of the reliability and validity of psychiatric diagnoses and the choice of diagnostic instruments. The final section, “Epidemiology of Major Psychiatric Disorders,” consists of seven chapters reviewing current knowledge of the epidemiology of schizophrenia, bipolar illness, depressive and anxiety disorders, alcoholism, drug dependence, personality disorders, and geriatric psychiatric syndromes.
