Shifting Viewpoints On reflection 2003 seems to have been a pretty decent year for Asia Pacific Viewpoint: circulation, citations and downloads are all substantially up on previous years. APV is now listed in the International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (as Pacific Viewpoint was until 1996). If these things are a measure of quality and relevance then we are at least moving in the right direction. A number of highlights from last year and the first part of this year warrant specific mention. Late 2003 saw the inauguration of the Asia Pacific Viewpoint Annual Lecture where we invite distinguished geographers to Victoria University of Wellington to talk on critical geographical and allied matters for the region. James Sidaway, a radical/ political/ development geographer, opened the series with a lecture entitled ‘The Degeneration of Tropical Geography: The Role of Keith Buchanan’. This talk, which focused on the role of the founding editor of APV (or Pacific Viewpoint as it was known then) in the evolution of radical development geography, was of special interest to many members of the audience who had worked with Prof. Buchanan.
