Hill, New York, Raven, 1983,322 pp This book reviews 10 different topics in ultrasound, with illustrations and current references compiled by numerous knowledgeable authors. From a practical point of view, the general radiologist and sonographer will be most interested in the chapters dealing with abdominal, obstetric-gynecologic, and small parts imaging. The book begins with a chapter on ultrasound of the common bile duct in which the controversial topic of bile duct diameter before and after cholecystectomy is nicely discussed, along with other significant concepts in this important imaging area. Another chapter covers the anatomy and pathology of the upper abdominal venous system, including the inferior vena cava, portal and hepatic veins. An important chapter deals with the role of ultrasound in monitoring ovarian follicular development in infertility patients. The authors include a section on the contribution of ultrasound to the area of “in vitro” fertilization and embryo transfer. A separate chapter discusses the prenatal diagnosis of craniospinal anomalies in a short but concise fashion. Yet another chapter deals with Doppler measurements of umbilical vein flow in various pregnancy conditions, interesting but still in the research stages. Two excellent chapters deal with small parts imaging of the scrotum and prostate.
