Proceedings of the 2nd workshop on diversification in inland finfish aquaculture The DIFA II workshop (DIVERSIFICATION IN INLAND FINFISH AQUACULTURE II) was organized by the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters, University of South Bohemia, Czech Republic and the CENAKVA and held from 24 to 26 September 2013 in Vodňany, the Czech Republic. The workshop was divided into four sessions: Quality of fish flesh and nutrition, Reproduction and Biotechnology, Pollutants in the aquatic environment, and Freshwater aquaculture of commercially interesting fish. Some 118 experts from 16 countries around the world attended the workshop, with an opportunity to hear 46 oral presentations and to see 50 posters within these 3 days. In addition to other distinguished guests, we were very pleased to welcome the presence of Mr. Feng Xuan, the Counsellor for Science from the P. R. China in the Czech Republic. During the workshop, the chairmen of each session evaluated the students’ oral and poster presentations. During the final ceremony the workshop organizer, Martin Pšenička, honored the two winners, both from the ranks of young scientists of the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters, University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, Czech Republic. The award for the best oral presentation was given to Hilal Güralp (Laboratory of Reproductive Physiology), for ‘Embryonic stages and primordial germ cells development in pikeperch Sander lucioperca (Teleostei: Percidae)’, authors: H. Güralp, K. Pocherniaieva, M. Blecha, T. Policar, M. Pšenička, T. Saito. http://www.frov.jcu.cz/images/stories/aktuality2013/foto_k/DIFA_VII.JPG The award for the best poster was given to Markéta Prokešová (Laboratory of controlled reproduction and intensive fish culture), ‘Effect of water temperature on early life history of African catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822)’, authors: M. Prokešová and B. Drozd. The highlight of the workshop was a celebration regarding the opening of the South Bohemian Research Center of Aquaculture and Biodiversity of Hydrocenoses (CENAKVA), the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters, University of South Bohemia, Czech Republic. This building complex of laboratories and scientific centers in Vodňany was initially opened on 26 September 2013, in an official ceremony attended by distinguished guests from social life together with participants of the DIFA II workshop. Among the distinguished guests was the President of the Senate of the Czech Republic, Mr. Milan Štěch; the Rector of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, Prof. Libor Grubhoffer; the President of Fish Farmers Association of the Czech Republic, Jan Hůda; the President of the European Aquaculture Society, Sadasivam J. Kaushik; and representatives of embassies in the Czech Republic, fishing and water companies, universities, institutions and other guests from all continents (see photo). Celebrities symbolically launched the Siberian sturgeon and wished the center many research projects and international prestige (see photo). The Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters, University of South Bohemia, Czech Republic project goal had been to raise money from European funds to cover the costs of construction of this modern workplace, which amounted to 253 million CZK. A wide array of presentations was given during the workshop, many workshops providing practical experience and others offering new scientific results. Selected papers from the workshop underwent serious peer review; thus, this small proceedings volume includes only a limited number of these papers.
