LOWELL s. LEVIN2 Yale University W are concerned with the relative frequency of significant m findings, termed âSignificance Batting Averagesâ (SBA) , associated with classes of predictors and criteria, especially with regard to particular types of validity assessment. This concern is relevent to three issues for which the establishment of associations among indices carries implications : (a) determination of relationships among the variables represented, (b) direction for the investment of effort for practical returns, and (c) assessment of the usefulness and degree of development of the represented conceptual categories. With respect to the first point, we are reminded that measurements are not the variables they are meant to represent, either in the sense of completeness of coverage or in the sense of direct evaluation. Correlations among the measurement scores are merely suggestive then, whatever the sample or the care with which the instruments are developed. Nevertheless, the testing of associations among measures is necessary, if not immediately sufficient, for theoretical development bearing on the variables meant to be tapped. %Nowat State University College a t Buffalo.
