Possible therapeutic value of digital venography in two laminitic horses R. F. REDDEN PO Box 507, Versailles, Kentucky 40383, USA. Introduction Digital venography is a useful tool for evaluating and monitoring vascular changes in the feet of horses with laminitis. The procedure is described in the accompanying satellite article (Redden 2001). To date, the author has performed venography on over 100 laminitic feet with moderate to severe digital pathology. The extent of the perfusion deficits appears to be well correlated with clinical and radiological severity, and with outcome. In particular, horses with stark loss of contrast in 3 key zones; the lamellar vessels, circumflex area and terminal arch, have a grave prognosis for recovery, despite aggressive therapy. Therefore, the procedure has both diagnostic and prognostic value. In addition, clinical observations suggest that the procedure may also have some therapeutic benefit. An intriguing phenomenon noted on several occasions is the unexpected clinical improvement observed in some laminitic horses with moderate to severe digital pathology (including rotational and/or vertical displacement of the third phalanx) in the days and weeks following venography. Until recently, the routine has been to perform venography on only one foot (the foot considered to be most
