Making Political Science Matter: Debating Knowledge, Research, and Method is both a response and a challenge to Flyvberg's 2001 book Making Social Science Matter . Both books illuminate an interdisciplinary discussion about the most appropriate mix of research methodologies to adequately address research questions in political science. This topic is examined from both a methodological and a philosophical point of view. The methodological discussion primarily argues for the greater inclusion of qualitative methodologies in research and provides several different viewpoints on the most appropriate ways to do this. The philosophical argument centers on the Aristotelian concept of phronesis , broadly defined as practical wisdom or prudence. These philosophical arguments examine the effectiveness of various approaches to research to have a practical impact on social and political problems. The book is divided into three sections: (a) The Flyvbjerg Debate, (b) Phronesis Reconsidered, and (c) Making Political Science Matter. The first section critically examines Flyvbjergs's visions for a renewed social science.
