HAGOCYTOSIS, OR THE SO-CALLED STARRY SKY effect, is present in the germinal centers of normal lymph nodes and to a more advanced degree in nodes exhibiting reactive follicular hyperplasia. In regard to malignant lymphoma, however, it has been repeatedly stated that "Phagocytosis by the reticulum cells very rarely occurs, a point of considerable importance in differentiating this disease from simple inflammatory conditions in which phagocytosis of nuclear debris and cellular pleomorphism are common."10 For this reason the microscopic feature of phagocytosis has been used by some pathologists as a histological criterion for ruling out lymphoma and for establishing the diagnosis of reactive follicular hyperplasia. Our own observations, however, have repeatedly emphasized to us that phagocytosis, and specifically karyophagocytosis (phagocytosis of nuclear debris), can be found in a small but significant proportion of cases of reticulum cell sarcoma. I t is also noteworthy that the histological and cytological changes of the lymphomatous tissues of such cases are similar to those seen in malignant lymphoma of children in Africa,l5 as well as in different types of lymphoma of domestic animals.ll*18, lo It is our purpose, therefore, to direct attention to this relatively unrecognized histological variant of reticulum cell sarcoma, which-because
