One of the support comments for this work states: ‘Dowling et al. is a rare instance of a textbook that has developed alongside the field – helping to shape what it is today – and remains a leading international human resources management (IHRM) textbook worldwide’. Having been involved in either reading, using or reviewing all of the previous editions of International human resource management by Professor Dowling and colleagues, I thought it appropriate to compare the sixth edition to the earlier versions to see whether or not the reviewer had established the right positioning of the text. To that end, I consulted the third edition, and reviewed whether the content of the latest edition meets the contemporary needs of both teachers and practitioners in the field. There is clear progression and obvious alignment to current thinking and practice in general. As an Australian who has worked internationally in HR, I was keen to observe whether the authors had taken the international HRM content to the level expected in contemporary texts by practitioners and international academics.
