PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL IN PRACTICE THE ORGANISATION COUNTY NATWEST GROUP LIMITED County NatWest Group Limited is the investment banking subsidiary of the National Westminster Bank Plc. Structured in 1986 to take advantage of the opportunities afforded by financialderegulation (’Big Bang’), County NatWest provides corporate and institutional clientsworldwide with a full range of investment banking services.These include corporate finance, venture capital, equity security operations (research, trading and sales in equities and derivative instruments) and investment management. In the UK some 1500 staff are employed. To anyone with knowledge of City institutions, it will be apparent that the Company contains staff of differenttraditions, disciplinesand approaches. On the one hand, managers involved in debt financing can display a thoroughness and precision associated with the maintenance of a bureaucratic administrative machine; on the other, managers involved in the tradingof equities operate in a far less structured and more individualisticenvironment. Despite these differencesbetween Divisions,it is possible to identify features of a common culture within the Company. Using the classification developed by Harrison and Stokes (19861, it can be said that County NatWest has a very strong achievement culture; a strong (though declining) power culture; and relatively low support and role cultures.
