Maintaining Earthâs biodiversity before the rising tide of human population will not be easy. Building our own ark requires the establishment of a network of conservation areas in which all facets of biodiversity are represented. It is insufficient that our ark only have a full complement of passengers; it must also provide for their needs during its voyage to ecological sustainability. Like the original, the modern Noah has two jobs: a conscientious travel agent who ensures that all creatures have tickets and a master shipbuilder whose staterooms afford a comfortable passage for a long and difficult journey. In situ conservation of biodiversity requires solutions to two very different problems: reserve selection and reserve design. First, the full range of biodiversity must be represented in areas slated for protection. No matter how completely all elements of biodiversity are represented in any proposed reserve network, however, each reserve must be capable of maintaining population, community, and ecosystem processes over ecological and evolutionary time. In an ideal world, an objective consideration of the distribution of biodiversity would lead to the identification of priority areas which would then be managed for their natural values in order to minimize future anthropogenic extinctions.
