According to its editor Fabien Lévy, this volume owes its existence to a trivial calendrical detail: the arrival of the year 2000. To mark this occasion, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris organised a wide‐ranging exhibition on the theme of time, entitled Le temps, vite . The majority of the seven texts presented here began life as papers given at IRCAM between January and March 2000, under the direction of Lévy, then its educational advisor. He has collected together articles by four Francophone scholars (François Decarsin, a specialist in questions of time in French contemporary music, the ethnomusicologist Catherine Basset, the artistic director of IRCAM Eric de Visscher, and Jérôme Baillet, an authority on the music of Gérard Grisey) and one American scholar (Anna Maria Busse Berger). In addition, Lévy has included translations of articles on related topics by Theodor W. Adorno and John Cage.
