Attention: An Eye Tracking Study
lthough there are several predictors of second language (L2) read-
ing success, proﬁcient readers tend to use a variety of cognitive
and metacognitive strategies (Sheorey & Mokhtari, 2001). As opposed
to relying solely on linear reading, or bottom-up processing, effective
L2 readers frequently utilize global strategies, or top-down processing,
including awareness of text structure and selective attention to key
points (Grabe & Stoller, 2013). However, prior research on L2 reading
strategies tended to rely on surveys and other self-report protocols,
and these methods have limitations (Bax & Weir, 2012).
Using eye tracking as an L2 reading research tool is gathering
momentum (Bax, 2013). First language (L1) research has revealed
that eye movements “reﬂect moment-to-moment cognitive processes”
(Rayner, 1998, p. 372) and are “a window into language and cogni-
tion” (Spivey, Richardson, & Dale, 2009, p. 225). L1 eye tracking
