Intolerance of ambiguity as a personality variable1 ' This paper is an abndgment and modification of a dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Ph D degree at Columbia University, 1960 1 am grateful to Professor Richard Chnstie, my sponsor, for his help dunng the entire study, to the many mdividuals who helped make available the samides used, and above all to my late wife Janet Anzel Budner for her invaluable support and help TWs study was completed m the course of research related to personahty vanables affectmg the performance of medical school students under a grant-m-aid from the Commonwealth Fund to the Bureau of Applied Social Research at Columbia University It may be identified as Publication N o A319 of the Bureau of Apphed Social Research.
