Ethical Leadership and Governance in Organizations: A Preamble This is the first Special Issue of the Canadian Journal ofAdministrative Scietices devoted entireiy to ethical leadership and governance in organizations. The need to explore the phenomenon of ethical leadership in organizations is prompted by the increasing societal concern that it is unacceptable for organizational leaders to be indifferent to moral responsibility, much less engage in unethical behaviour. The articles in this special issue emerged in part from the symposium on this topic at McGill University, Spring 1999, to examine the critical academic and practical issues of ethical leadership. The first three articles provide individual or micro-level analysis; they explore the nature of ethical principles and issues involved in understanding the phenomenon of ethical leadership and the means to develop and foster it in organizations. The next three provide institutional or macro-level analysis by examining ethical leadership issues in the specific context of modern education, medicine, and organizational governance. In the first article, Edward Aronson reviews the modes of influencing followers inherent in the directive, transactional, and transformational styles of leadership, the major perspectives in business ethics-deontological and teleological, and proposes a conceptual model that links ethics to leadership.
