Emmanuel Shapira, M.D., Ph.D., died on May 5, 1998, from complications following surgery. The community of Medical Genetics has lost a respected colleague, a gentle physician, a devoted mentor, and a beloved friend. Emmanuel was born in Kovno, Lithuania, in 1933, and immigrated with his family to Israel two years later. He graduated from Hebrew University and in 1958 received his M.D. degree from Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem.
