HAT IS C/TY & SOCIETY? Or, since at this writing it does not yet exist, what should City & Society be? This is a more sobering question for the editor than it is likely to be for the readers, because what it becomes is much more under the control of the editor than it is under the control of most readers. What City & Society becomes depends on three major "causal" systems: (1) the policy-making of the Society for Urban Anthropology as a unit of the American Anthropological Association; (2) the editorial system set up by the editor, including manuscript solicitation, peer reviewing, manuscript selection, direct editing, meeting production deadlines, proofing, and all the rest; and (3) the very real system of urban anthropological research, teaching, and practice proceeding at a variety of institutions in the United States and many other countries. The policy-making of the Society for Urban Anthropology is expressed in the official editorial policy of the journal: City & Society publishes articles concerned with urban communities and complex societies generally. The journal is intended to foster debate and conceptual development in urban anthropology and related disciplines, and to foster communication among disciplines. Articles reflect applied
