Editor's Note and Acknowledgements It gives me great pleasure to be able to record that Charles J. Smith's article, `Musical Form and Fundamental Structure: An Investigation of Schenker's Formenlehre', which appeared in Vol. 15/ii±iii (1996) of this journal, has been awarded the Outstanding Publication Award of the Society for Music Theory. This is the third time this prestigious award has been given for an article in Music Analysis, the previous two recipients being Richard Cohn for his article `Maximally Smooth Cycles, Hexatonic Systems, and the Analysis of LateRomantic Triadic Progressions' (Vol. 15/i), and Naomi Cumming for her article `The Subjectivities of ``Erbarme dich'' ' (Vol. 16/i). All three of these articles were published during the Editorship of Anthony Pople. As Anthony now resigns his position, we could not ask for a more timely and appropriate acknowledgement of the outstanding contribution he has made, through the pages of this journal, to the development of the discipline of music analysis in the United Kingdom and throughout the world. During a period when our discipline has been changing rapidly, when its borders have been expanding widely, when its certainties have been challenged furiously from many directions, Anthony has steered this ship with a steady hand. He has successfully maintained a lively interest in the best of traditional theoretical and analytical work, while always keeping an eye on the new, spotting those key articles that will challenge and provoke, that will reorientate our understanding of what analysis is and what it can do. Over the past five years, the breadth and quality of coverage of issues ± from the finer details of Schenkerian theory and pitch-class set genera, to direct engagement with critical theory and popular music studies ± clearly attest to Anthony's skill at rooting out the best and most exciting work in our discipline. As I take up the office of Editor, I do so in the certain knowledge that, from a British perspective at least, and in no small part due to Anthony Pople's efforts, both the journal and the discipline are in robust health. Abstract

It gives me great pleasure to be able to record that Charles J.
