Defending Elias: Applications of Figurational Research in the Social Sciences

Defending Elias: Applications of Figurational Research in the Social Sciences Gabriel , N. , & Mennell , S. (Eds.) ( 2011 ). Norbert Elias and Figurational Research: Processual Thinking in Sociology . Malden, MA : Blackwell Publishing . ISBN 978‐1‐4443‐3957‐4 ( 271 pp., $34.95). Norbert Elias (1897–1990) was a leading European sociologist who was the driving force behind what is called process or figurational sociology. Figurational research focuses on figurations such as networks of individuals as its unit of analysis. It is often called process or processual sociology due to the underlying goal of understanding social actions or features as an ongoing process of actor and action together, rather than as separate entities. Elias’ most celebrated work is The Civilizing Process (1939), where he examined how increases in dependency (dependency chains) between individuals in societies lead to changes regarding general etiquette such as table manners and bodily functions, as well as violence and other behaviors. Elias focused on the link between the psychological individual and the social state and the process of interaction that resulted in change. Until the 1970s, Elias’ work was largely ignored. In this edited volume contributors attempt to illustrate, with varying degrees of success, why the work of Elias should not be ignored.
