Baltimore: The Johns Hopkins Uni- versity Press, 1982, $37.50, 541 pp. For most of us who are engaged in research in the biological sciences, biostatis- tics is less a method than a language. Biostatistics is the accepted way to communicate the quantitative aspects of our discipline to others. As a supplement to our logic, biostatistics tells us how to go about perceiving the limits of proper inference. This book is an exceptionally valuable work because Murphy shows us both sides of the biostatistical story-the user side and the provider side. As a scientist in medical genetics, he provides the viewpoint of a consumer of biostatistics. As a biostatistical consultant, he also knows what it takes to provide statistical support for those of us who often do not speak the language of biostatistics well enough to speak for ourselves. Clinical, epidemiological, and laboratory investigators are often impressed or confused by the heterogenous appearance of their own data. They often have a natural skepticism about procedures that make the data appear to behave as uniformly as biostatistical analyses often do. Murphy shows why this natural skepticism can be a very powerful tool http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png American Journal of Medical Genetics Part A Wiley

Abstract

Book Reviews 295 Biostatistics in Medicine. Edmond A. Murphy.
