SIMON From the Department of Medicine, University of N e w Mexico School Albuquerque, N e w Mexico of Medicine ON THE RECOMMENDATION of the National Research Council, a developmental program is being conducted to extend the useful shelf-life and to establish the safety and efficacy of whole blood and of sedimented red cells at refrigerator temperatures (1 to 6 C) by adenine-supplemented preservative media. About 18 months ago the Army Medical Research and Develop ment Command, which has encouraged and supported basic research on this problem since the mid-l950’s, embarked on a large intramural and extramural program to investigate the use of such blood in the treatment of traumatic shock. More recently, the National Blood Resource Program, National Heart Institute, also initiated a major program to augment the Army’s efforts and to expand the scope Received for publication August 30, 1967; accepted October 12, 1967.
