QuigleyÂ Jr. (Kent: Kent State University Press, 2016. Pp. xxix, 381.) Pure Heart attempts to tell the story of a family during the Civil War. The Â Reverend Benjamin Dorr presided over Philadelphiaâs Christ Church, also known as âthe Nationâs Churchâ Â ecause the congregation included famous and imporÂ ant Â eople. His son William, a Âawyer, joined the Union Army, and Â fter surviving Gettysburg, was killed in action a year later at Spotsyla Â vania. WilliamÂ F. Quigley, a history teacher at The Governorâs AcadÂ my in Byfield, MasÂaÂhuÂetts, bases his book on a series of letters between the s c s pair. He intends it to show the tensions within Northern society during the war. Specifically, he seeks to identify from their relationship âthe spirit that might have restrained war feverâ in the country (xxv). The experiences of both the father at home and his son on the battlefield provide a lens through Â which to see how the war affected them. The result,
