By William F. Quigley Jr. (Kent: Kent State University Press, 2016. Pp. xxix, 381.) Pure Heart attempts to tell the story of a family during the Civil War. The ­ Reverend Benjamin Dorr presided over Philadelphia’s Christ Church, also known as “the Nation’s Church” ­ ecause the congregation included famous and impor­ ant ­ eople. His son William, a ­awyer, joined the Union Army, and ­ fter surviving Gettysburg, was killed in action a year later at Spotsyla ­ vania. William F. Quigley, a history teacher at The Governor’s Acad­ my in Byfield, Mas­a­hu­etts, bases his book on a series of letters between the s c s pair. He intends it to show the tensions within Northern society during the war. Specifically, he seeks to identify from their relationship “the spirit that might have restrained war fever” in the country (xxv). The experiences of both the father at home and his son on the battlefield provide a lens through ­ which to see how the war affected them.
