JOURNAL OF THE EARLY REPUBLIC (Fall 2014) reported that about 200 out of 500 died.2 I had access only to Chisholm's second edition, while Smith used the first, but I doubt that that fact was changed. Moreover, the second edition responds to accusations that Chisholm had attacked the Bolama project as a means of discrediting abolitionism (Chisholm, 102). Unfortunately Smith, who frequently links his story to the horrors of slavery and the slave trade, missed this possible reason for Chisholm's focus on the Hankey. None of these or other errors question Smith's overall argument. But, given the circumstantial nature of the evidence, the scope of some of Smith's broader claims, and the book's role in expanding Atlantic history, these flaws are troubling. Ro bert V.
