Williamson Jahnsenykes, LL.D. and Hon. Member of the Royal American Board of Literature, in six letters to his son. ``Olim meminisse juvabit.'' 1 Now First Published, Quebeck, A.D. 1901.2 SALVS · PVBLICA · MEA · MERCES.3 This document was edited by Ed White to accompany his article on pp. 179­ 199. 1. Olim meminisse juvabit: from Virgil's Aeneid, 1.203, ``Forsans et haec olim meminisse juvabit.'' Caleb Alexander's 1796 translation (the first in the new United States) renders this line: ``And, perhaps, it will please us to remember hereafter these woes'' (Alexander, The Works of Virgil: Translated into Literal English Prose; with some Explanatory Notes, Worcester, 1796, 179). 2. This minimal publication information appeared on the original title page, although the work appeared in late 1808, and has been attributed to Farrand and Mallory of Boston. The first notice I have been able to find appears in the Nov. 21, 1808 Independent Chronicle (Boston), which notes that the work was ``just received at the Law Book-store, Suffolk-Building, price 25 cents.''
